EPL: ‘I’m not afraid to be myself’ — Rosenior unbothered by online jokes

Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior says he is “not bothered at all” by online memes comparing him to television characters, insisting he is comfortable being himself as he enjoys an impressive start at Stamford Bridge.

As reported by BBC Sport on Tuesday, the Chelsea gaffer has won seven of his first nine matches in charge of the Blues, but his animated touchline manner and distinctive style have prompted fans on social media to draw comparisons with characters including The Inbetweeners’ Will McKenzie and The Office’s David Brent.

Rosenior, who says he is not active on social media, revealed it is his teenage children who have made him aware of the jokes circulating online.

“I’m not afraid to be myself,” Rosenior said. “If I wear glasses, if I sound a little bit over the top when I speak, or articulate myself in a certain way, or I don’t look like a manager, it doesn’t bother me at all.”

The former Strasbourg boss acknowledged that the memes can affect his family, but said he anticipated the reaction when he took on one of football’s most high-profile jobs.

“The reason I know is that I’ve got teenage children,” he said. “They’re on social media. It affects them, it affects my parents and my family. But I knew that walking into this job, it was going to happen. It’s normal.

“When you’re prepared for it, it makes you smile. I’m a confident person. If you’re affected by things like that, you shouldn’t be in this job.”

Rosenior was a surprise appointment following Enzo Maresca’s departure in January, but he has made a strong early impression.

He has become only the second English manager to win his first four Premier League matches with the club and has guided Chelsea into the last 16 of the Champions League after a 3-2 victory away at Napoli.
