Dutch legend Ronald De Boer hails Bassey

Nigerian international Calvin Bassey has entered the good books of Dutch legend Ronald De Boer.

The 22-year-old has impressed since making his Eredivisie debut for the Dutch champions against Sparta Rotterdam last month.

Bassey had a nightmare start on his Ajax debut when he was sent off after just 17 minutes following a poor tackle when Ajax clashed with PSV in the Dutch Super Cup.

He missed the club's first two league outings due to suspension but has put up a string of some decent performances on his return to the side.

Bassey's impressive display in the Ajax defence has drawn some praise from the ex-Rangers forward who believes it is impossible to drop the Leicester City academy product.

“I’ve been really impressed by Bassey. He was unlucky to be sent off in the Super Cup. He started the game well, and we have already had the people who thought he was just a big lump, charging around kicking people, changing their opinions.

“He gives Ajax strength and speed and on the ball he’s alright. Of course he can still improve on that part of his game but I think he showed in the last few games that he’s undroppable. Together with Jurrien Timber, they make a great couple in defence.

“Rangers won’t be looking forward to meeting him again. I thought he was one of the best players in the Europa League final, he was unbelievable.

“He’s still very young so it’s a great signing for Ajax. He has some rough edges but Ajax is the perfect place to polish those up.”

Bassey joined Ajax from Glasgow Rangers in July in a deal worth €22m plus an additional €5m as add-ons.

The Super Eagles defender will make his first Champions League debut against his former club Rangers on Wednesday, September 7.
