Double heartbreak for Iwobi as Manchester United extend Everton's poor run

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi had to be subbed off after he sustained an injury in the second half of Everton’s 3-1 loss to Manchester United.

Everton were looking to snap a seven-game losing run when they travelled to Old Trafford to take on in-form Manchester United in their round of 32 FA Cup fixture.

As usual, Everton boss handed Iwobi a starting shirt in the middle of the park.

Manchester United started the game on top, and it took them just four minutes to take the lead. Brazilian star Antony got on the end of a cross from Rashford and slipped the ball into the net at the far post.

However, United’s lead did not last, as Everton went in search of an equalizer. De Gea was caught off-guard, as a square ball from Neal Maupay trickled between his legs, only to be pushed into the net by Conor Coady to make it 1-1 after 14 minutes.

Manchester United had chances to score in the second half but they lacked the cutting edge.

The second half began in the same fashion as the first. Unfortunately for Everton, their midfield engine Iwobi suffered an injury. The Super Eagles star went on a counter for the toffees, but Red Devils defender Tyrell Malacia raced towards him and dished out a strong tackle.

Unfortunately for Iwobi, he twisted his ankle in the process and could not continue. He had to be replaced by Doucoure in the 51st minute.

Iwobi’s absence was felt in midfield, as Manchester United scored the second in the 52nd minute.

The Toffees thought they had equalized late on after Dominic Calvert-Lewin put the ball in the net. However, it was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.

Marcus Rashford completed the 3-1 victory for Manchester United in stoppage time after a precise finish from the penalty spot.
