Dessers want new challenge as Cremonese move nears completion

Nigerian international, Cyriel Dessers has explained his decision to join newly promoted Serie A outfit Cremonese.

The 27-year-old has been a subject of much transfer speculation following his stellar campaign in the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League.

Dessers guided Feyenoord to the finals of the Conference League losing by a solitary goal to Jose Mourinho-led AS Roma.

The Dutch-born Nigerian netted 10 goals to emerge as the competition's top scorer ahead of Tammy Abraham who managed 9.

He returned to KRC Genk after Feyenoord couldn't afford his asking price of 4 million euros to tie him down on a permanent deal.

The Super Eagles striker has decided to join Serie A new boys Cremonese in a deal that is believed to be close to completion.

Despite his imminent exit, the forward was named in Genk's starting XI against Eupen in the Belgian Pro League on Sunday, August 7.

Speaking in a post-match interview, the forward revealed it is clear he will join Cremonese and believe that it is a new challenge he is taking on.

“Have I just said goodbye to the fans? Yes, maybe a little,” he told the media.

“I think it’s no secret that a transfer is close. Sunday is a crucial day. Cremonese and Genk are negotiating. It’s getting very close now.

“A top competition has always been my dream. I have never hidden that.

“If I stayed in Genk, I might be able to compete for the top scorer title, but I’m ready for something new. I played football in Belgium and the Netherlands and saw all the stadiums and teams there. I came in second and third.
