Dessers prepared for bench role

Cyriel Dessers is prepared to take up any role in the Super Eagles ahead of Thursday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sierra Leone, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Dessers, who got off the mark for the Eagles on his return to the team a year after he made his debut, faces stiff competition from Napoli striker Victor Osimhen on who leads the Eagles' attack for the encounter.

“If I’m chosen to start or not, in either role, I will do everything for the team and the country,” Dessers told the media in Abuja ahead of the game.

“These are always tough games and we will prepare very well for them.

“Sierra Leone have proven to be a tough team in the past, but if we are in our top form on the day, then we have to beat them.”

The striker, who had a memorable season with Feyenoord, on loan from Genk last season, scoring 20 goals and recording six assists in 44 games, is also relishing the prospect of playing his first game for Nigeria on home soil but rued the absence of fans at the venue after FIFA ordered the Eagles to play behind closed doors following crowd violence during the World Cup qualifier versus Ghana in March.

“I am really happy to finally be in Nigeria with the Super Eagles for the very first time after scoring my first goal for the country during one of our international friendly games against Mexico in the US.

“It’s a really nice feeling. We had an already busy week in the US and to come here finally at home feels good.
