Staunch fans of the Super Eagles have slammed Nottingham Forest striker Emmanuel Dennis following his penalty miss against Portugal.

Jose Peseiro's team were hammered 4-0 by a Bruno Fernandes-inspired Portuguese side at a packed Estadio Jose Alvalade on Thursday, November 17.

The Selecao went into the halftime break with a two-goal lead courtesy of Bruno Fernandes' brace.

Nigeria had a chance to pull a goal back at 2-0 with just 10 minutes left on the clock but Emmanuel Dennis squandered the chance by striking the woodwork.

Fernando Santos' side would later add two more goals to cap a comprehensive victory heading into the FIFA World Cup.

Displeased by the performance of the ex-Watford striker, some fans took to social media to criticize the 25-year-old.

Check out some reactions below:

@Ibukun Aluko: Emmanuel Dennis needs to understand that he isn't that guy. Man can't even start for a very poor Nottingham side.

@Damilola Alagbe: Emmanuel Dennis is nothing close to who he think he is.

@Solace Chukwu: The fact @NGSuperEagles has continued to hand out caps to Emmanuel Dennis following the AFCON fiasco says almost as much about the state of Nigerian football as missing out on the World Cup.

@ezegburugburu: Emmanuel Dennis is overrated.

@dezfootie: Emmanuel Dennis can kiss the National Team goodbye. You don’t go against your captain (William Ekong) and your coach (José Peseiro) in set-piece decisions. It’s not a one-man show. It’s a team for a reason
Disgusting embarrassing behavior from the Nottingham Forest forward. ????????

@devoyce007: Emmanuel Dennis is just a player who thinks very highly of himself unfortunately he is not what he thinks he is.

@Amara Nwankpa: Emmanuel Dennis should never wear the green jersey again.

Meanwhile, Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro has defended the striker in a post-match interview.

“It is nothing for a player to miss a penalty and I won't blame Dennis for missing it against Portugal. He has my protection,” the Portuguese gaffer told NFFTV
