International basketball ruling body FIBA say elections into the executive board of the Nigeria Basketball Federation must be held on or before November 30 2021.

FIBA in a letter dated November 11, signed by its president, Hamane Niang, secretary-general, Andreas Zagklis, and addressed to Musa Ahmadu-Kida stated that election into the executive board must be held at the latest November 30 while also revealing that results from competitions organised while the sports ministry are in charge of the federation will not be recognised.

The NBBF and the sports ministry have been at loggerheads over who runs the federation after the ministry announced the postponement of the elective congress originally set for October 30 in Benin City, the Edo State.

According to the letter, FIBA confirmed that the ministry has written to it on three different occasions, firstly, “Informing them the postponement of the NBBF’s Elective Congress, initially scheduled to take place on 30 October 2021.”

Also the ministry’s intention to “Assume the organisational responsibilities of the NBBF Premier Basketball League.” as well as “their assumption of duties for the participation of the Nigeria national team during the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualifiers.”

FIBA in their letter dated November 11, has however kicked against the ministry’s intended takeover of the federation’s duties.

“As you are aware, under Article 9.7 of the FIBA’s General Statutes, National Member Federations (NMF) must manage their affairs independently without the influence of third parties and ensure that their officials are elected or appointed under a democratic process.

“Also, Article 9.1. a. requires NMFs to “[m]aintain full control and governance of basketball in their country, including without limitation, control over their national competitions.

“Please be advised that FIBA will not recognise any competition or result that stems from an event not controlled by the NBBF. Furthermore, as per our letter of November 2, 2021 to the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, FIBA expects that the NBBF celebrates its Electoral Congress no later than November 30, 2021.
