Nigeria's weight lifter, Rafiatu Folashade Lawal says she was not aware of her latest record after claiming a gold medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games.

The 25-year-old claimed a new Games record of 206kg in the women's 59kg weightlifting event on Sunday, July 31.

"I'm really happy because I didn't even know I broke the record. I was only focussed on winning the gold medal," Lawal told the BBC.

"Hearing the fans [Nigerians in the crowd] really helped. Although it's not the first time I will be facing a huge crowd, but the support really calmed my nerves."

Lawal has already conquered Africa in the women's weightlifting event.

She won a gold medal at the 2019 and 2021 African Games in the women's 59kg weightlifting event.
