Club football: Check out Nigeria's leading goal machines

The immediate past season saw some impressive performances from Nigerian players in Europe. Some of these players have attracted interest from some European giants following their brilliant performance at their clubs.

Today, we look at the top ten prolific Nigerian strikers in the just-ended season.

Odion Ighalo - Al Hilal 28 goals

Odion Ighalo was the most prolific Nigerian player last season. The former Manchester United player scored an astonishing 28 goals for Saudi-based club Al-Hilal last season.

Despite his impressive goal-scoring numbers, it was not enough to earn the 33-year-old a call-up by new Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro.

Paul Onuachu- KRC Genk 23 goals

Onuachu scored 23 goals for Belgium side KRC Genk in the previous campaign.

Despite contributing a significant number of goals to his side, it wasn’t enough to guarantee Genk the Belgian league title and league cup. They also failed to pick a ticket to Europe next season.

Asisat Oshoala- Barcelona Femeni 22 goals

The only female to make the list. The ex-Super Falcons captain found the back of the net on 22 different occasions last season.

The Barcelona superstar finished the season as the League’s top scorer with 20 goals in 19 outings despite missing quite a number of games to injury.

Cyriel Dessers- Feyenoord 21 goals

The Dutch-born Nigerian had a season to remember on his loan spell at Feyenoord.

The 27-year-old netted 21 goals in 46 appearances and also finished the season as the top scorer in the maiden UEFA Europa Conference League.

His goals guided the Rotterdam-based club to the grand finale of Europe’s third-tier competition.

Taiwo Awoniyi- Union Berlin 20 goals

The 24-year-old had an impressive season with the club based in the German capital.

The former Liverpool player has attracted interest from European giants like Manchester United following his stellar performance in the German Bundesliga.

Sadiq Umar- UD Almeria 19 goals

The gangling striker was instrumental in Almeria’s promotion into La Liga. The forward scored 19 goals in the Spanish Segunda Division last season.

He has been tipped to replace Darwin Nunez at Benfica following the Uruguayan’s move to Liverpool.

Victor Osimhen- Napoli 18 goals

The in-form striker netted 18 goals in 32 outings for Luciano Spalletti’s side last term. He ended the season as Napoli’s top scorer.

He was also voted Serie A young best player of the season. The 23-year-old’s performance has attracted interest from several clubs.

Arsenal Manchester United, and Newcastle United are all chasing the signature of the young Nigerian striker.

Emeka Eze- Ankara 16 goals

The Nigerian striker who plays as a striker for Turkish club Ankara scored 16 goals last season. The attacker has never featured for Nigerian before.

Anthony Nwakaeme- Trabzonspor 15 goals

The 33-year-old scored 15 goals and provided 11 assists for the Turkish side last term. He was instrumental to his side, guiding them to their first league title in 38 years.

The Nigerian is set to leave the club. He confirmed the news via his Instagram account after the club failed to meet his financial demands.

Freddie Ladapo- Rotherham United 15 goals

Freddie Ladapo scored 15 goals for Rotherham United last season.

The 29-year-old joined Ipswich Town on a three-year deal on May 30.
Ladapo is eligible to represent either England or Nigeria at the international level.
