AC Milan winger Samuel Chukwueze is enjoying a new lease of life under new coach Ruben Amorim as the club prepares for the 2026/27 season.
The Nigerian was one of Milan’s standout performers in their pre-season victory over Manchester United on Saturday and is relishing his new role under Amorim with one goal and two assists in their 4-2 win.
After a summer of experimentation with his position, Chukwueze showed in Wroclaw that he could be a valuable addition to Amorim’s squad. Against United, the Nigerian appeared to dispel any remaining doubts about his suitability for the wing-back role.
Throughout his career, Chukwueze has primarily played as an attacking winger, but the new tactical setup Amorim has tailored for him appears to suit him well.
Chukwueze is determined to make the most of the opportunity, both to help the team and to finally establish himself at Milan.
“Yes, he’s a good coach. He trusts me, so he gave me an opportunity. Now it’s up to me to seize it. He simply gave me faith, and I think I have to take advantage of it. I can’t waste this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, returning to Milan after my loan,” Chukwueze told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Although it’s a position I have to adapt to because I’ve never played in this position in my career. As a footballer, if a coach wants you to play in this position, you have to do it by believing in yourself and in the coach, because he knows what he wants.
“So I just have to keep working hard, believing in myself and that I can do it. For me, it’s an opportunity I have to seize. I know it’s a difficult task, but I believe in myself. I know I can do it, that I can do anything.”
Asked if he was satisfied with the way Milan were playing, Chukwueze said he was pleased but acknowledged that he still had work to do in his new position.
“Yes, a lot. For me, I think it’s something I need to work on. It’s my first time playing in this position, so I’m continuing to work hard. I need to improve every practice. I think the coaching staff is helping me.
“The coach is helping me too. Every time I make a mistake, he tells me, ‘Oh, Chukwueze, this is what you have to do.’ So, I think I’ll improve before the season starts.”
The 27-year-old could now be in line for his best run in Italy since joining Milan in the summer of 2023.
Chukwueze recently returned to Milan after a loan spell at Fulham, who opted against activating the €26m purchase option included in the agreement.
During his time at Fulham, the winger scored three goals and provided four assists in 23 Premier League appearances, forming a strong partnership with fellow Nigerians Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey.
