Celtic interim head coach Martin O’Neill has confirmed that Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho will miss Sunday’s clash against Kilmarnock due to a hamstring injury.
The 28-year-old, who joined the Hoops during the summer transfer window, suffered the injury four minutes into Celtic’s 2-1 win over Sturm Graz in the UEFA Europa League and has yet to feature for the club since then.
Speaking ahead of the Kilmarnock fixture, O’Neill revealed that the former Leicester City striker would be sidelined for a few more weeks.
“Yeah, he is going to be out for a few more weeks. I think that obviously after Sunday we’ve got this fortnight break and we’ll see how things go from there. But yeah, he certainly won’t be available for Sunday anyway,” the 73-year-old Northern Irishman said, according to Celts are here.
Iheanacho joined Celtic under the influence of his former coach, Brendan Rodgers, who was relieved of his duties a few weeks ago, leaving the Nigerian striker’s future uncertain.
There have been rumours that the club wants to part ways with him in the January transfer window, especially as Celtic currently trail Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts by nine points—one of the reasons Rodgers was sacked.
Celtic have, however, been in good form of late, winning three of their last five games across all competitions.
