'Buy calculators' — South Africa's Sports Minister trolls Nigerians on social media

South Africa's Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has aimed a subtle dig at Nigeria and other countries in Group C as Bafana Bafana edges closer to securing qualification for next year's FIFA World Cup.

Bafana Bafana held Nigeria to a 1-1 draw at the Free State Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein, brightening their chances of booking a ticket to the USA, Canada, and Mexico in 2026.

Hugo Broos' side scored the opener in the 25th minute after forcing William Troost-Ekong to score an own goal, before Calvin Bassey equalised on the stroke of halftime.

The home side held on in the second half to secure a vital point, which saw them move to 17 points in Group C with just two matches left to play.

The Super Eagles currently sit in third position with 11 points—three points adrift of the Republic of Benin on 14 points, and six points behind South Africa.

In a post on X, South Africa’s Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie urged his countrymen to purchase tickets for the last two qualifying matches, while suggesting that Nigeria, Benin, and Rwanda would need calculators.

"Please get your tickets early for next @BafanaBafana game, let’s buy tickets whilst other nations buy calculators," he wrote on X.
