Boston Celtics head coach Ime Udoka has been suspended for the 2022-2023 season following an alleged relationship with a female staff member.

The Boston Celtics deem Udoka's relationship as a violation of the NBA franchise policies.

The team is yet to make a decision on the future of the Nigerian American beyond the 2022-2023 season.

The team added that assistant coach Joe Mazzulla will be promoted as head coach to lead the team.

The former Brooklyn Nets assistant manager in a statement welcomed the decision and apologised to the team, fans, and family for his actions.

"I want to apologise to our players, fans, the entire Celtics organisation and my family for letting them down," the 45-year-old said in a statement.

"I am sorry for putting the team in this difficult situation, and I accept the team's decision. Out of respect for everyone involved, I will have no further comment."

The Oregon-born Udoka reached the NBA Finals in his first season as head coach, becoming the fifth person in history to attain that feat.

Udoka played for Nigeria's basketball team. He led Nigeria to the 2006 FIBA World Championships.

He also played for Nigeria in the 2005 and 2011 FIBA Africa Championships, winning a bronze medal in both tournaments
