Nigerian international Calvin Bassey has described Ajax Amsterdam's 4-0 over Glasgow Rangers in the Champion League group opener last week as a bittersweet experience.

The 22-year-old made his UEFA Champions League debut against his former club as he helped the Eredivisie champions to thrash Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side at the Johan Cruff Arena.

Bassey, who assisted highly rated Ghanaian youngster Mohammed Kudus to score his side's 3rd goal disclosed that it was difficult seeing his current side thump his old club.

On the other side of the coin, the versatile defender could not hide his excitement following his impressive Champions League debut.

“I consider the Rangers FC players to be my friends, the Super Eagles defender told Dutch publication, Het Parool as quoted by PUNCH SPORTS Extra

“I played with them for two years, shared joys and sorrows. And it is not easy to hurt friends so much. But for me personally, and my family, it was a beautiful evening.”

Calvin Bassey joined Ajax from Glasgow Rangers in the summer transfer window for £19m to become Nigeria's most expensive defender.
