Awoniyi named in Alan Shearer's PL team of the week after brace against Southampton

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been named in Alan Shearer’s Premier League Team of The Week following his impressive performance against Southampton.

The 25-year-old scored two first half goals as Steve Cooper's side beat the Saints 4-3 in a thrilling Premier League encounter on Monday night.

The Super Eagles striker's remarkable performance on the night helped his club to secure their second victory in five games.

The ex-Union Berlin forward received a brilliant pass from Brennan Johnson in the 18th minute of Nottingham’s victory against the Saints, giving Cooper’s troops the lead.

Three minutes later, he helped the Reds and himself when he deftly turned and stretched out Southampton keeper Alex McCarthy to get to the ball.

After his impressive showing, Awoniyi was selected as the centre attacker in a 4-3-3 formation with Tom Cairney on the right and Brazilian Willian on the left.

The double was Awoniyi's first in the Premier League after joining Forest from Union Berlin in the summer.

The Reds will look to build on that performance when they take on Chelsea in their next Premier League fixture.
