Alex Iwobi watches on as Everton end 25-year jinx at Arsenal

Super Eagles playmaker Alex Iwobi watched the encounter from the bench as Everton claimed a 1-0 triumph over Mikel Arteta’s men to secure their first win at Arsenal since 1996.

Goalkeeper Bernd Leno fumbled the ball into his own net midway through the second half to help Carlo Ancelotti’s men to a landmark Premier League victory at the Emirates Stadium.

Iwobi featured for 61 minutes last week when Everton played out a 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur at the Goodison Park, but the 24-year-old was only named on the bench at the Emirates.

The Merseysiders had lost just once in their previous 11 league fixtures away from Goodison Park, and they made the home side sweat in vain during the opening period.

And the visitors’ breakthrough moment arrived in the 76th minute as Brazilian forward Richarlison dribbled his way past a couple of Arsenal defenders before unleashing a shot which Leno turned into his net.

Iwobi, though, would be a little disappointed that he didn’t get to taste action against his former side on a day the record books were rewritten.

Raised, nurtured, and groomed at Arsenal, Iwobi left his boyhood club in 2019 to team up with Everton in a deal worth just over 30 million euros.
