After an Olympics-esque opening ceremony of the 13th edition of the African Games, the multisport event is now well underway, with nations securing medals across various competitions.

A host of disciplines have concluded, with events like table tennis and badminton drawing the proverbial curtain on successful tournaments adorned with beautiful award ceremonies.

Egypt has surged to the top of the medal standings through their impressive performances across various events, notably table tennis, wrestling, and swimming.

The North Africans clinched top honours in both the men's and women's categories, catapulting them to the forefront of the medal table.

Egypt dominates medal table

After asserting their dominance in table tennis, both in singles and doubles events for both men and women, led by Omar Assar and 16-year-old sensation, Hana Goda, Egypt has maintained its momentum.

Hana's achievement made her the youngest-ever Continental Cup winner at the event, according to GTVSports.

Following their unparalleled dominance on the tables, the North African country swiftly made a splash in the swimming pool, engaging in a battle for supremacy with South Africa as both nations made their mark on the podium.

In the most recent developments, Egypt has surged ahead with an impressive tally of 84 medals, securing an additional 11 gold medals to their growing count on Monday, March 11.

Nigeria has risen to a distant second place, overtaking South Africa, with a total of 16 gold medals as of Monday. Meanwhile, the Rainbow Nation has slipped to fourth place, with Algeria holding onto its position in third.

Nigeria's rise can be credited to their exceptional performance in weightlifting, where they clinched an impressive eight gold medals across both men's and women's events.

Ghana begins on a stuttering note

In contrast, Ghana, the host nation of the 13th African Games, faced a significant setback in their medal pursuit, starting with table tennis and spiralling into other disciplines.

However, on Sunday, March 10, Winnifred Ntumi broke the medal drought for the West African nation, sweeping an impressive tally of three medals: 1 gold and 2 silver medals in weightlifting.

Adding some more good news to the West African nation was Abeiku Jackson, who clinched a silver medal in the men's 50m butterfly event, finishing with a time of 24.23 seconds.

Ghana currently hold the 10th position and may climb higher in the rankings if he secures another medal in swimming.
