77,500 fans to watch Eagles, Mexico clash in California

About 77,500 fans will watch the international friendly between Nigeria and Mexico on July 3 at the LA Coliseum after the Governor of California, Gavin Newsome, announced the lift of most COVID-19 restrictions in the state.

The Super Eagles will take on El Tricolor in the United States as they step up preparations for their World Cup qualifying campaign as well as next year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

California officially reopened on June 15 after Newsome announced the lift of most restrictions.

“California is open again, California has turned the page. Let us celebrate this remarkable milestone,” said Newsome on Tuesday in a quote carried by a Mexican website, capradio.org.

This also means that stadiums can be filled at their full capacity starting from June 15 and the organisers of the exhibition match between the Mexico national team and Nigeria announced that the stadium will be open at full capacity on July 3.

“The match between Mexico and Nigeria at the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum will be sold at full capacity, with no seating restrictions,” read the statement from the organisers (Mextour).

This will be Nigeria’s first game with fans in attendance since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020 and Mexico’s second friendly game at a stadium that is at its maximum capacity following their last weekend game against Honduras at the Mercedes-Benz venue in Atlanta with a sold out crowd.

Sales of tickets for the event have begun on the designated website ticketmaster.com with prices ranging from $40 to $250.

The last meeting between both countries was in a friendly match en route to the 2014 World Cup, which ended 0-0.
