2026 WCQ: Zimbabwe coach fires subtle warning to South Africa ahead of clash

Zimbabwe head coach Michael Nees has assured that his side will avoid defeat in their FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa.

Despite having a slim chance of qualification, the German tactician says his team will not be a walkover for Bafana Bafana when they lock horns on Friday, October 10.

“We have a massive responsibility to be fair sportsmen, fair competitors, and to bring our best on the pitch in the first game, and in the second game also,” Nees said in an interview with Herald Online.

“It’s our duty as sportsmen.”

The 58-year-old added that going all out against Hugo Broos' side doesn't mean they are favouring other teams in the group.

“We cannot just experiment here and there because this would almost be interpreted as unfair competition, and we cannot afford that. FIFA is looking at us.

“Especially against South Africa, there’s a lot at stake. We want to represent the country with pride and patriotism, and in the best possible way — against one of the top five teams in Africa. And it will be a full house, packed,” he added.

Any slip up for the Bafana Bafana will give the Super Eagles a huge boost in their chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
