2026 WCQ: Super Eagles disappoint again, settle for 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe

Kelechi Iheanacho's second-half strike earned Nigeria a point against Zimbabwe following a terrible start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The Super Eagles continue to struggle after picking only two points from a possible six following back-to-back draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe in Group C.

Following a slow start by the three-time African champions, Zimbabwe broke the deadlock after 25 minutes through a powerful freekick from Walter Musona.

Nigeria were immediately awoken from their slumber as they chased the game, but the host were resolute in defence keeping the likes of Terem Moffi at bay.

However, after the break, coach Jose Peseiro made quick changes, bringing on Iheanacho and Bayer Leverkusen's Victor Boniface.

Moments later, the Super Eagles had a golden opportunity to cancel Zimbabwe's lead after they were awarded an indirect freekick. Bonfice spotted Iheanach at the far post but his effort was cleared off the line.

Just over the hour mark, the Leicester City attacker levelled to give Nigeria hope, after connecting to a brilliant pass from captain Moses Simon.

Pesier rang in more changes, with Umar Sadiq and Jamilu Collins coming in late but it was not enough as the Super Eagles shared the spoils with the Warriors of Zimbabwe.
