2026 WCQ: Super Eagles can no longer qualify as runners-up

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have missed out on qualifying for the FIFA World Cup via the runners-up playoffs.

This comes after the conclusion of some penultimate World Cup qualifier matches in the African zone.

Currently with 11 points, the maximum number of points Eric Chelle's side can amass is 17, should they win their last two games against Lesotho and Benin Republic.

However, four second-place teams on the continent have already surpassed the 17-point mark with a game to spare.

The likes of Gabon and Madagascar are both on 19 points with a game in hand, making them strong candidates to qualify for the playoffs.

Also, other countries like Burkina Faso and Cameroon have amassed 18 points.

The only way Nigeria can seal qualification now is by topping Group C after the remaining two qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin Republic.
