Four persons lost their lives while seven others sustained varying degrees of injuries following three separate road accidents across Lagos on Wednesday.

The incidents were confirmed in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.

The most fatal of the incidents occurred at Berger Bridge, inward Eleko, along the Ibeju-Lekki Expressway. According to preliminary investigations, an articulated truck conveying a 20-foot container was ascending the bridge at an excessive speed when it collided with an interstate Toyota Hiace bus. The truck driver reportedly lost control while attempting to avert a collision, causing the heavy vehicle to overturn directly onto the bus.

Four adult males died at the scene, while six others sustained injuries. Joint responders comprising LASEMA, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Nigeria Police Force administered first aid before transporting the injured victims to Epe General Hospital. Recovery operations involving heavy-duty equipment were deployed to clear the corridor.

In a related incident, LASEMA's Tiger Team responded to a solo truck crash at about 4:09 a.m. near Vetland School, inward Agege Pen Cinema, along Old Abeokuta Road. The truck rammed into a solar-powered streetlight pole and mounted the road median, obstructing traffic. Investigators attributed the crash to reckless driving, though no casualties were recorded. The vehicle was subsequently impounded at the Abattoir Police Station.

Meanwhile, a third accident occurred at Lanre Bus Stop, inward Igando, along the LASU-Igando Road. Driven against traffic due to congestion caused by a broken-down vehicle on the opposite lane, a DAF truck collided with a Toyota Corolla. The driver of the Corolla sustained a minor head injury and was rushed to Igando General Hospital by an associate. LASEMA deployed its heavy-duty equipment, Super Metro, to clear the obstruction and restore normal traffic flow.

Following the string of crashes, Dr Oke-Osanyintolu sternly admonished motorists to strictly observe speed limits, avoid reckless manoeuvres, shun driving against traffic, and ensure their vehicles are mechanically sound before hitting the road.

He also urged residents to promptly report emergencies using the state's toll-free lines, 767 and 112, while expressing condolences to the bereaved families and wishing the injured a swift recovery.
