Operatives from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) have raided the Old Court Road Market in Aba, Abia State, confiscating counterfeit packaging materials for premium alcoholic beverages valued at over ₦200 million.

Acting on credible intelligence, the agency's Investigation and Enforcement Directorate targeted five shops suspected of serving as a distribution hub for cloned caps, labels, and cartons used in producing fake spirits and wines.

Videos circulating across social media platforms captured NAFDAC officials loading massive stockpiles of cloned materials into enforcement vehicles.

The seized items included counterfeit labels, corks, packs, and outer boxes for widely consumed brands such as Jameson, Glenfiddich, Four Cousins, Lord’s Dry Gin, Imperial Blue, Goya Oil, Chelsea, Squadron, and Seaman’s Aromatic Schnapps.

The enforcement exercise encountered hostile resistance from local traders who attempted to block the agency's operatives, complicating the evacuation of the illicit materials.

In an official statement detailing the raid, NAFDAC confirmed that the shop owners fled before operatives arrived, prompting officers to seal the premises.

"During the operation, NAFDAC's Investigation & Enforcement operatives encountered threats and resistance from traders, making the evacuation of the seized materials challenging," the agency reported.

"The owners of the five shops were absent, and the premises were placed on hold to prevent interference with the items remaining inside."

To advance the investigation, NAFDAC summoned the Chairman of the Market Union, who agreed to secure the sealed shops and assist the agency in tracking down the fleeing shop owners.
