Former Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi has waded into the controversy surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s clash with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus.
Ronaldo reportedly left the Portugal national team camp after falling out with Jesus over playing time ahead of their UEFA Nations League clash against Denmark.
The 41-year-old was reportedly incensed by his limited involvement after being an unused substitute against Norway and accused the 72-year-old manager of not telling him the truth.
Sharing his thoughts on the development on the Obi One Podcast, the former Super Eagles captain criticised Ronaldo for his big ego.
Mikel added that walking out on the team as captain was in no way justifiable.
“The last thing you will do is to walk out of your national team or your football club as a captain, as someone everybody looks up to,” Mikel said.
“It just takes away everything you stand for. I do not care what deal he had with the manager or not.
“We should be celebrating Cristiano Ronaldo now towards the end of his career,” Mikel added.
“He has given so much to football. Even if you are not a Cristiano Ronaldo fan, you cannot deny what he has done for the game.”
