New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has acknowledged the valuable impact of Nigerian New Yorkers on the local culture and community

Mamdani expressed his admiration for the culture in a message to celebrate Nigeria's 66th Independence Day anniversary.

“It was a joy to commemorate 34 years of the Nigerian Day Parade alongside the many Nigerian New Yorkers who fill our city with life,” Mamdani said.

The mayor emphasized the impact of Nigerian entrepreneurs, as well as the reach of Nigerian music and cuisine throughout New York.

“From the entrepreneurs whose businesses strengthen our neighbourhoods, to the sounds of Afrobeats pouring out of graduation parties in Southeast Queens, and the aroma of Agege bread calling out to passersby in Brooklyn, the impact of Nigerian New Yorkers is felt across the five boroughs,” he added.

According to Mamdani, Nigerians have enriched New York's cultural landscape, adding diversity and vitality.

“Our city is richer in culture, stronger in community, and more vibrant because of your contributions,” he said.

On October 3, the mayor participated in Nigeria's 66th Independence Day festivities held in New York. During the event, he highlighted the significant impact of Nigerian cuisine, music, and football on both the city and broader American society.
