Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze says Ruben Amorim’s trust and regular opportunities have restored his confidence at AC Milan after a difficult spell at the Italian club.

Chukwueze returned to Milan this summer following a loan spell at Fulham, where he scored three goals and provided four assists in 25 appearances across all competitions.

The Nigeria international had managed only three goals and two assists in 26 Serie A appearances for Milan during the 2024/25 campaign but has made an encouraging start to his second spell under Amorim.

The 27-year-old has featured in all five of Milan’s Serie A matches this season, starting four, while providing two assists.

Speaking to Footy-Africa while on international duty with Nigeria, Chukwueze said the confidence shown in him by Amorim has made a significant difference.

“I just have to keep doing my best for the team and repay the confidence the coach has in me by playing well and helping the team,” the 60-cap Super Eagles star said.

“Every coach has his own style of play. Last season I wasn’t a regular, but this season has been different. The confidence is back, and I will hopefully keep showing what I can do,” he added.

“Playing ninety minutes means he has confidence in me, and I have to keep showing the coach reasons to keep playing me.”

The former Villarreal winger also acknowledged the difference between his current situation and last season, crediting the Milan boss for helping him rediscover his confidence.

Amorim has also handed Chukwueze a different tactical responsibility, deploying him as a right-sided wing-back in his three-man defensive system. The Portuguese coach has previously backed the Nigerian to adapt to the role, citing his mentality and character.

The tactical switch has allowed Chukwueze to combine his attacking qualities with greater defensive responsibility, while his two assists have helped him establish himself as a regular in Amorim’s side.

His revival comes after an inconsistent spell at Milan and a loan move to Fulham last season, where he enjoyed more regular football before returning to Italy.

Chukwueze will now look to build on his encouraging start and maintain his place in Amorim’s plans when he resumes club duties after Nigeria’s international engagements.
