A member of the Federal House of Representatives, Oshodi-Isolo II, Lagos State, Okey-Joe Onuakalusi, has been called out for snubbing Yoruba indigenes to empower people of his Igbo ethnicity.

The first time Onuakalusi was called out was months ago when his constituency programmes sponsored 20 participants to China to study cyber security, food processing, and artificial intelligence, among others. Another programme sent nine participants to South Africa to study nursing and diabetic care. Of the 29 participants, 24 are Igbos, while five are Yoruba.

The lawmaker was heavily criticised for the action. According to the critics, Yorubas are the indigene and owners of the land and should be accorded the majority of the slots. They reminded him that he's a stranger who shouldn't be channelling the slots to his fellow Igbos.

Months after the callout, Onuakalusi took the same route again by snubbing Yoruba indigenes to empower Igbos.

He shared photos of himself handing certificates of empowerment to the people. The names on the certificates are Igbo names, leading to outrage from Yoruba people on social media.

He said on X, "As part of my commitment to creating practical opportunities for the people of Oshodi-Isolo Federal Constituency II, I empowered 100 women, men and youths through a three-day entrepreneurship training programme themed “Empowering the Future.”

"The programme was organised in collaboration with the Federal Co-operative College, Oji-River, and provided participants with practical business and entrepreneurship skills, business materials, and a total of ₦10 million in start-up grants.

"At the end of the programme, each beneficiary received ₦100,000 paid directly into their account, alongside relevant tools and materials to enable them start or expand their businesses.

"My objective is clear: I want the people I represent to have access to opportunities that can translate into sustainable livelihoods. This intervention is therefore not just about training or certificates; it is about equipping beneficiaries with the resources and knowledge required to build viable businesses, generate income and create opportunities for others.

"I also appealed to the beneficiaries to make responsible use of the grants and materials provided. I specifically urged them not to sell the empowerment items, because the purpose of the intervention is to support productive economic activity and long-term sustainability.

"My office will therefore continue to follow up with the beneficiaries in the coming months to better understand the progress of their businesses and the impact of the intervention.

"This is my commitment to practical representation-creating opportunities, empowering our people and investing in a more economically productive Oshodi-Isolo Federal Constituency II."
