Kelechi Iheanacho is one match away from setting a new Bursaspor scoring record after extending his impressive start to life in Turkey with another two goals.

The Super Eagles striker scored twice as Bursaspor secured a 2-1 away victory over Batman Petrolspor on Saturday, September 19, helping his side move clear at the top of the Turkish second division. The brace took Iheanacho's tally to 11 goals and two assists in eight league appearances since joining the club, with the Nigerian scoring in every league match he has played so far.

His latest goals also extended his scoring streak to eight consecutive league games, equalling the Bursaspor record previously set by Brazilian striker Fernandao during the 2014/15 Süper Lig season. Fernandao scored in eight successive league matches between rounds 12 and 19 of that campaign, beginning his run against Kasımpaşa in November 2014 and ending it against Gençlerbirliği in January 2015.

The Brazilian had scored 13 goals in 18 league appearances by the end of the streak and went on to finish the season with 22 league goals and seven assists. More than a decade later, Iheanacho has now matched his eight-game scoring sequence, although Bursaspor are currently competing in Turkey's second tier.

Iheanacho had already established a personal best by scoring in six consecutive matches before his brace against Manisa FK on September 7 extended the run. His subsequent goals against Esenler Erokspor and Batman Petrolspor have taken his scoring streak to eight matches.

A goal in his next league appearance would therefore take Iheanacho beyond Fernandao's mark and give him the Bursaspor record for scoring in nine consecutive league games. The 29-year-old's goals have also contributed significantly to Bursaspor's strong start to the season.

Following Saturday's victory, Bursaspor sit top of the Turkish second division with 19 points from their opening eight matches. They have recorded six victories and one draw and hold a three-point advantage over Kayserispor, who have played one game fewer. Iheanacho joined Bursaspor as a free agent this summer following a spell with Celtic in Scotland, where he helped the Glasgow club secure a league and cup double.

His form in Turkey has also coincided with a return to the Nigeria squad. Iheanacho has been called up for the Super Eagles' friendly against Russia next month, marking his first international selection in more than a year. His previous involvement with the national team came at the 2025 Unity Cup in London.

The striker will now have another opportunity to impress Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle as he seeks to re-establish himself in the national team. Before then, Iheanacho has the chance to make Bursaspor history, with another goal in his next league appearance enough to establish a new club record of scoring in nine consecutive league matches.
