Operatives of the Benue State Police Command have arrested 46 suspects in connection with the blockade and reported attack on the convoy of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, along the Makurdi-Gboko Federal Highway.

The incident occurred as the former Anambra State Governor was traveling to Yelwata in Guma Local Government Area to commiserate with victims and families affected by community attacks.

According to police accounts and viral videos on social media, a group of armed youths barricaded both lanes of the highway, obstructing Obi's entourage and throwing stones at the cars.

Officers at the scene exercised tactical restraint to prevent violence, eventually escorting Obi safely back to the airport.

Addressing reporters following the disruption, Obi condemned the incident and called on security agencies to hold perpetrators and political sponsors accountable.

"This rascality cannot be allowed. We are a country, and can we confront these people on our own if these people cannot provide us with security?" Obi said.

Briefing journalists in Makurdi, Commissioner of Police Cletus Nwadiogbu confirmed the 46 arrests and stated that investigations are ongoing to track down key ringleaders.

He warned against political intolerance as the country approaches upcoming electoral cycles.
