Former Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi has tipped Arsenal to defend their Premier League title this season.

The Gunners got their title defence campaign off to a blistering start after thumping newcomers Coventry City 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium on the opening day.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with veteran Ghanaian journalist Michael Oti Adjei, the 39-year-old explained that Mikel Arteta's team has remained consistent in recent seasons, which gives them the edge over their competitors.

“I think they will go on to defend the title,” Mikel said.

“Arsenal is the team that is steady, stable, settled. I think that's just something that's going to give them the advantage this season,” he added.

The former Super Eagles star, however, questioned the approach by the current title holders in their bid to defend their crown.

“The question is, how do they defend? Do they play a more entertaining football, a more exciting football? Or are they going to be boring like they did last year?” he quizzed.

After ending their over two-decade wait for the Premier League title, the 2013 AFCON winner urged Mikel Arteta's team to play more fluid, attacking and exciting football in the current campaign.

“Now the pressure of them not winning it in the past 22 years is gone. Now they have to be free. Play with freedom. Defend it with pride,” he stated.

“They have the players there. They have the talent to do it. Be free. Express yourself.”
