Super Eagles defender Chibuike Nwaiwu has emerged as one of the most sought-after young defenders in Europe this summer, with West Ham United joining Fulham and Bayer Leverkusen in the race to sign the 22-year-old Trabzonspor centre-back ahead of the new season.

Nwaiwu’s rise has been rapid. He joined Trabzonspor from Austrian club Wolfsberger AC in January, having helped them win the Austrian Cup the previous season. Despite arriving midway through the campaign, the Super Eagles defender quickly established himself as a key figure in the Turkish club’s defensive unit and played an important role in Trabzonspor’s Turkish Cup triumph, a performance level that has now attracted serious attention from across Europe.

Fulham were first to test Trabzonspor’s resolve with a formal offer, which the Turkish club rejected. Reports from Turkey indicate that Trabzonspor are demanding a fee that would set a new record for the most expensive sale in the history of the Turkish Super Lig, a valuation that reflects how highly they regard the defender.

West Ham’s interest stems from a combination of immediate need and long-term ambition. The Hammers suffered relegation from the Premier League last season and are determined to secure an immediate return, making defensive reinforcement a priority.

The club are already short of options at centre-back following the return of Axel Disasi to Chelsea after his loan spell ended, and the Championship’s demanding schedule, which includes more matches than the Premier League alongside domestic cup commitments, has made adding defensive depth an urgent concern.

At just 22, Nwaiwu also offers West Ham a long-term investment. His aerial dominance, intelligent positioning and composure under pressure have drawn widespread praise, and his experience across both the Austrian Bundesliga and the Turkish Super Lig gives him the adaptability to settle quickly in a new environment.

With Fulham and Bayer Leverkusen both maintaining their interest, West Ham may need to move decisively if they are to win the race for a defender many consider among the most promising available this summer.
