Ambassador-designate Reno Omokri has responded to music star Davido following comments the singer made on social media.

In a post on X, Omokri addressed Davido directly, expressing surprise at the singer’s reaction to his remarks concerning Peter Obi’s comments on the repatriation of Nigerian prisoners from Ethiopia.

He described Davido’s language on Instagram as vulgar and unbefitting of an international celebrity who represents Nigeria on the global stage.

According to Omokri, he understood that Davido’s displeasure stemmed from an earlier appeal in which he urged the singer not to use the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a platform to draw attention to bandits and terrorists operating in Nigeria.

He noted that Peter Obi had commended Davido for those remarks, suggesting that the singer’s response may have been influenced by a desire to defend the former presidential candidate.

Omokri argued that while Davido may have intended to pressure the government into addressing insecurity, such comments inadvertently promote terrorists by amplifying fear, aiding recruitment efforts and attracting financial support.

Drawing a comparison, Omokri cited American streamer IShowSpeed, whom he said used the same World Cup platform to project a positive image of Nigeria by wearing a Nigerian jersey and speaking favourably about the country.

He lamented what he described as a tendency among some Nigerians to overlook the country’s strengths and urged influential public figures to refrain from portraying Nigeria negatively before a global audience.

Omokri wrote, “Dear Mr. David Adeleke AKA @Davido, Thank you for your feedback. I was rather surprised by your response to my post, setting the record straight on Peter Obi’s false allegations against His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, regarding the repatriation of Nigerian prisoners from the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. Most shocking is your insult.

“You are an international celebrity whom Nigeria is proud of. Coming to insult me on my Instagram profile with such vulgar words should be beneath you.

“Yes, I am aware that you were upset at my appeal to you not to use an international platform, such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to give publicity to bandits and terrorists. I am also aware that Peter Obi praised you for doing that, which may have made you feel compelled to defend him.

“I did that because while your intention may be good and you think you are pressuring the government, the actual effect of what you did is to give publicity to the terrorists and help them spread fear, recruit new members, and raise funds.

“How can you, a Nigerian citizen, with a global platform, go on a global stage to give publicity to terrorists and de-market Nigeria, meanwhile, at that same event, and on that same day, IShowSpeed, an American citizen, used his celebrity and the global stage of the World Cup to market Nigeria by wearing a Nigerian jersey and speaking well of the same country you de-marketed. Many of us do not know what we have got”.

The exchange follows Omokri’s appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he explained that his delayed resumption as Nigeria’s envoy to Mexico was due to the country’s 2026 World Cup preparations, not a rejection of his posting.
