Benfica manager José Mourinho was set to be announced by Madrid manager today (Monday, May 25).
But according to reports, José official announcement has been put on hold due to the elections.
It is understood that everything was prepared and scheduled for Mourinho’s unveiling.
However, President Florentino Pérez is facing opposition in the elections and the announcement has now been delayed.
Enrique Riquelme, who is the candidate challenging Pérez in the elections, has opened his electoral headquarters in front of the Bernabéu.
If not for Riquelme, Pérez would have been re-elected on Sunday and Mourinho’s appointment would have become official 24 hours later.
Mourinho, who flew back to Lisbon yesterday, will likely have to wait until June 7, when the election results are expected.
And if Pérez doesn’t win, it is unclear whether Real Madrid will go for Mourinho.
