During his 23rd coronation anniversary celebration on Saturday, the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, shared a noteworthy incident from his past. He revealed that he once declined a ₦5 million bribe during the military regime of the late General Sani Abacha.
The monarch recounted that this occurred while Lagos State's former governor, Michael Otedola, was detained under Abacha's rule. Akiolu explained he had personally appealed to authorities to release Otedola’s international passport, emphasising that the military government needed Nigerians’ trust and support.
Shortly after the passport’s release, someone offered him ₦5 million as thanks, but he refused. His decision, he said, was rooted in integrity, discipline, and reverence for God.
“It is not about money. Whatever you do in life, do it with the fear of God and always pray to Him,” the monarch stated.
Reflecting on his 32-year career with the Nigeria Police Force, Oba Akiolu emphasised that policing is a noble profession rooted in honesty and accountability.
The Lagos monarch urged Nigerians to continue backing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration, expressing confidence that the ongoing economic and infrastructure reforms will ultimately bring positive change.
He acknowledged that the journey may be tough, but assured that patience and faith will help the nation overcome its current challenges.
