Former South Africa captain, Teko Modise has expressed his disapproval of Ademola Lookman’s finishing skills after the forward missed a clear opportunity during Atletico Madrid’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal in the first-leg semifinal of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.
The Nigeria international returned to the field at the Wanda Metropolitano and played the entire game after a brief injury.
He failed to convert a prime chance that could have allowed Atletico Madrid to equalize.
In the 53rd minute, he shot from close range, but his attempt went directly to David Raya, who handled it with ease.
After the game Modise told SuperSport that Lookman should have exhibited greater composure when facing the goal.
He said, “He could have performed better. A remarkable save was made. Whenever he is shooting under such pressure, he needs to think a bit faster.
“I believe he might have selected a better angle away from the goalkeeper to compel him to make an exceptional save.
“The shot he took was not far enough from Raya for him to make the stop, but those are the risks he also brings to the game.”
Despite the missed chance, Ademola Lookman continues to be an important player for Atletico Madrid since his winter transfer from Atalanta.
The Nigerian forward has accumulated two goals and two assists in seven UEFA Champions League matches thus far.
With the crucial second leg approaching at the Emirates Stadium, Lookman will be eager to regain his scoring form as Atletico aims for a spot in the final.
