Police at Kamuzu International Airport have arrested a Nigerian businessman identified as Collins Iheanacho Bernard, aged 45 in Lilongwe for violating foreign currency regulations.
KIA Public Relations Officer, Sapulain Chitonde Lee, says that on March 25, 2026, at about 01: 35 PM, detectives carrying out routine checks in the Forward Lounge intercepted Bernard, and when asked to declare what he was carrying, he denied having foreign currency.
However, a physical search uncovered $2,800 hidden in his old passport and pockets and he did not produce supporting documents and claimed the money had been given to him by a friend without formal paperwork and officers confiscated the cash and arrested him.
Bernard will be charged with possessing foreign currency without permits and attempting to externalize foreign currency, contrary to the Exchange Control Act.
He comes from Village Amanator, Traditional Authority Ebonyi, District Lagos, Nigeria.
Airport Police have issued a stern warning to all passengers to comply with exit formalities to avoid arrest.
