The Kano State Government on Wednesday stated that it has received credible intelligence reports through the State Security Council indicating deliberate attempts by some individuals to sow confusion and incite a breakdown of law and order during the upcoming Eid-el-Fitr (Sallah) celebrations in the state.
The state government, however, reaffirmed its commitment to promoting, protecting, and preserving Kano's rich cultural heritage.
In a statement, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, said the state will not compromise its primary constitutional duty to uphold peace, law, and order, and to protect the lives and property of all residents.
He said that in light of the foregoing, and after proper consultations with the Kano Emirate Council and other key stakeholders, the government has approved the arrangements for the celebrations.
He said Hawan Idi (Eid Durbar) will be conducted by His Highness, Sarkin Kano Muhammad Sanusi II, from the Kofar Mata Eid Praying Ground along designated routes to Gidan Shettima, ending at Kofar Fatalwa of the Kano Emir's Palace.
Hawan Nasarawa will take place in a modified form, but not on horseback
The commissioner announced the suspension of Hawan Daushe, saying it will be observed during subsequent Sallah celebrations.
Also suspended are Hawan Fanisau and Hawan Dorayi. According to him, the state took the decision in the best interest of public peace and safety.
The commissioner stated that all security agencies have been directed to intensify surveillance, ensure strict compliance with these directives, and take all necessary lawful measures to prevent any breach of peace before, during, and after the festive period.
"The government, therefore, calls on all residents to remain calm, law-abiding, and cooperative with security agencies, while also urging the public to avoid the spread of unverified information and to go about their normal activities peacefully throughout the Sallah period and beyond.
"The Kano State Government also appreciates the continued dedication and professionalism of security agencies in ensuring the safety and stability of the State, and reassures the public of its commitment to a peaceful and hitch-free celebration.
"The government extends its best wishes to all Muslims for a peaceful and joyous Eid-el-Fitr celebration," he said.
