Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has penned a heartfelt message to Atalanta fans after completing his move to Spanish giants Atlético Madrid.
After nearly four seasons in Bergamo, the 28-year-old joined Atlético Madrid on a permanent deal worth €40 million on transfer deadline day.
The former African Footballer of the Year penned a four-and-a-half-year contract with Diego Simeone’s side.
Lookman joined Atalanta in the summer of 2022 from Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig after a loan spell at Leicester City in the Premier League.
The Nigerian international unleashed his potential under manager Gian Piero Gasperini, guiding La Dea to their first-ever European trophy in his second season. He netted a historic hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final.
Lookman was also crowned African Footballer of the Year that same year.
The former Everton loanee, in a message shared on his social media platforms, expressed his gratitude to Atalanta, the fans and his teammates while relishing the special memories he created during his time at the club.
“To the Atalanta family, after nearly four years, the time has come for me to say goodbye. From the moment I arrived in Bergamo, you welcomed me like one of your own and pushed me to be the best version of myself.
“Together we made history — European champions, a night none of us will ever forget. Scoring a hat-trick in a European final and lifting a trophy with this club after a 61-year trophy drought will stay with me forever. Winning the African Player of the Year award in 2024 as an Atalanta player will also remain close to my heart. Those moments, those emotions, those nights under the lights are engraved in my heart.
“Thank you to my teammates, the staff and the club. To the fans, your passion, belief and energy meant everything. From day one, you stood by me and by this team through every moment.
“Every cheer, every banner and every away trip meant something. Thank you for making Bergamo feel like home and for giving me memories I’ll carry forever. Grazie di tutto, ciao.”
