A leading member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Peter Obi has urged Nigerians to be watchful or risk watching their freedoms vanish before their eyes.

The former presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections charged Nigerians in a response to a tweet by former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani.

“When governments kill protesters, intimidate judges, punish free speech, and flout court orders, democracy isn’t evolving—it’s unraveling. First-world and third-world democracies are starting to look the same: authoritarian in practice, regardless of the label.

“Democracy is more than elections; it’s about protecting dissent, upholding institutions, and respecting rights. When these pillars collapse, the system itself loses legitimacy. Citizens must stay vigilant or risk watching their freedoms vanish before their eyes,” Obi wrote.
