The viral video of former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore and detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has generated widespread reactions on social media.

Sowore, who has been at the forefront of calls for Kanu’s release, was seen sharing a warm hug with the separatist leader before his court appearance on Thursday, October 23.

Just days earlier, on Monday, October 20, Sowore and other stakeholders led a peaceful protest demanding the unconditional release of Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since 2021.

The latest video is being interpreted by many as a renewed push for Kanu’s freedom, as he continues to languish in detention.

However, shortly after meeting with Kanu at the Federal High Court in Abuja, Sowore was whisked away by armed policemen.

Eyewitnesses said the activist was accosted by security operatives who insisted that he accompany them to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command.

When asked what his alleged offence was, one of the officers reportedly said they were acting on the instruction of the Commissioner of Police, stating, “The Commissioner of Police said we should bring you to the office.”

Although Sowore questioned why no formal invitation had been sent to him, he was eventually taken away in a police van after insisting that his lawyer accompany him.

It will be recalled that the activist and publisher of the online news platform Sahara Reporters was one of the key organisers of the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest that took place in Abuja and other parts of the country last Monday.
