In a candid revelation during the 'Uncommon Evening with Akpabio' at Abuja's All Progressive Congress Youth Wing, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio unveiled a powerful secret behind his political journey. He confessed that a deep hunger — not just for food but for change — among his people fueled his resolve to enter the political arena.

Addressing a sea of Nigerian youths, Akpabio urged them never to lose hope in Nigeria’s future. He painted a vivid picture of his people's hardships, where many are so impoverished that they are better known as security men (Gatemen) and housemaids called Ekaete or Akpan—names that echo, stories of struggle and resilience.

Yet, amid these struggles, there is transformation. Akpabio, once a two-term governor of Akwa Ibom State, now a senator, minister, and the 15th president of Nigeria’s Senate, has reshaped his homeland. The state, once fraught with economic challenges, now shines as a burgeoning tourist destination, a testament to his visionary leadership in infrastructure and human capital development.

He also shared a heartfelt story circulating online about a young man he encountered onboard a flight. The young man, once helped by Akpabio with $85,000, has now established himself— a testament to the positive impact of genuine leadership.
