Reactions have trailed social media as Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the outgoing chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), officially handed over the mantle of the commission to Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will serve as acting chairman.

Yakubu, who oversaw the 2023 presidential elections, left the premises of the commission on Tuesday, October 7, after meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.

Agbamuche-Mbu, the oldest serving National Commissioner at INEC, is expected to oversee the affairs of the electoral body pending the appointment of a substantive chairman of the electoral umpire.

Announcing the transition, Professor Yakubu urged staff of the commission to extend their full support and cooperation to the acting chairman.

“I have today handed over to Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu as the Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission. I urge all commissioners and directors to give her the same level of cooperation and dedication that you have shown me” he said

Yakubu would be remembered for his controversial handling of the 2023 Presidential election.

His leadership will be remembered for managing the complexities of that election, despite the challenges faced. Now, with Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu stepping in as acting chairman, the focus should shift to continuity and ensuring a smooth transition. Agbamuche-Mbu, with her extensive experience, has the responsibility of keeping INEC stable during this interim period. The commission’s success depends on how well the team comes together, regardless of leadership changes."
