Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has said anybody anywhere who says Christians are not being killed in Nigeria by terrorists is lying.
"But a bigger lie is to say that only Christians are being killed. These terrorists are killing Christians, Muslims and Traditional African Religious adherents," he said in a Facebook post on Monday.
He said the killings started after the Obama administration destabilised Libya and Muammar Gaddafi's mercenary army fled Libya with money, arms and skills to countries in the Sahel, like Niger, Nigeria, Mali and Burkina Faso and metamorphosed into groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP.
He said, Boko Haram and the Islamic State – West Africa Province are fighting against secular governments in order to impose an Islamic State. "This means that they are fighting against Muslims, Christians and every other segment of society that does not believe in an Islamic state," Omokri said.
"To frame what is happening in Nigeria as a Christian genocide by Muslims is to play into the hands of these people. Their aim is just to overturn secular governments.
"In the past, Boko Haram and ISWAP have targeted prominent Muslims for elimination, including the Emir of Kano, who is the leader of Muslims in the largest Muslim majority city in West Africa.
"On Saturday, January 19, 2013, suspected Boko Haram assailants attempted to assassinate the Emir of Kano and almost succeeded. Emir Ado Bayero suffered injuries, and his driver was killed during the incident, along with three of his bodyguards.
"On Wednesday, July 23, 2014, a Boko Haram suicide bomber detonated an Improvised Explosive Device that was meant to kill General Muhammadu Buhari, a prominent Muslim. He was injured and escaped death by the skin of his teeth.
"In addition to attacks on churches, Boko Haram and ISWAP have attacked and destroyed hundreds of mosques and killed tens of thousands of Muslims, perhaps more. Much more.
"There have been more suicide bombings and attacks in mosques in Nigeria than in churches, including two suicide bombings at a mosque in Mubi, Adamawa State, on Tuesday, May 1, 2018, which killed over a dozen people. And in 2025, though these attacks have reduced, we still have mosque attacks, including one as recently as last month in Gidan Turbe, Tsafe, Zamfara State, in which over a dozen Muslims were abducted while praying.
"This is not to say that Christians and churches are not also at risk. The point is that these terrorists do not attack only Christians. Their target is Nigeria's secularity.
"If the Obama administration had not destabilised Libya in 2010/2011, it is most unlikely that Nigeria and other Sahelian countries would now be facing these internal security challenges.
"If Senator Ted Cruz is seeking a culprit, he should look closer to home to the Obama government that triggered this crisis and then refused to help Nigeria with weapons and intelligence, citing the Leahy Law.
"What Nigeria needs right now is help from her international partners in combating these groups, rather than rhetoric that aims to cause division between Muslims and Christians in the largest IslamoChristian nation on Earth.
"Provide intelligence on their location, and military assistance, just as is being done for Ukraine.
"And finally, physically visit Nigeria to meet with leaders of the Christian and Muslim communities to hear from the horse's mouths and help these leaders pursue and promote peaceful religious coexistence."
