Team Brazil produced a stunning performance in the qualifying race of the E1 Lagos GP on Saturday to take the pole position ahead of the main race on Sunday (today).

Piloted by Timmy Hansen and Leva Millere-Hagin, Team Brazil surged to a combined time of 01:06:908 to win ahead of Team Rafa, which is owned by tennis legend Rafael Nadal.

Team Brazil got three points for their qualifying win, but it still leaves them rooted in the eighth position of the championship standings with 51 points.

“We go into race day in high spirits and feeling good after a huge performance in qualifying,” Team Brazil’s pilots said after the race.

Team Rafa’s two points for their second-place finish in the qualifying saw them reclaim the championship lead with one point ahead of Team Brady, setting the stage for today’s showdown in the main race.

The battle to become the 2025 ‘Champions of the Water’ hangs in the balance, and a win today could prove decisive as Team Brady fights to defend its crown.

The winner of the main race will get a 38-point boost, the second-place team will get 31 points, while the third-place team will have 25 points.

Rodi Basso, founder and Chief Executive Officer of E1, said, “The warm welcome we have received in Lagos has been incredible. The people and passion of Nigeria have made this historic E1 Lagos GP presented by FirstBank possible, and I feel a great sense of pride that we have made racing here a reality.

“Our ambition is to build a motorsport legacy in Africa. This weekend’s race is just the beginning, and today’s qualifying sessions have provided a thrilling taste of what’s to come on race day.”

The E1 is an all-electric powerboat race which began last year in Jeddah, and Lagos becomes the first city in Africa to host it.

The E1 Lagos GP is also the penultimate race of the season, setting the tone for the championship battle ahead of the season finale in Miami next month.
