Former Nigerian striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni has highlighted weaknesses in the current Super Eagles squad that he believes have contributed to their underwhelming World Cup qualifying campaign.

Nigeria’s qualification hopes for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been dented by a string of disappointing draws, casting serious doubt on their chances of securing a ticket to the tournament in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

With just two matches remaining, Eric Chelle’s side currently sit third in Group C with 11 points—six points behind group leaders South Africa, who have amassed 17 points.

Gernot Rohr’s Benin Republic occupy second place with 14 points, sandwiched between Bafana Bafana and the Super Eagles.

Sharing his thoughts on the team’s struggles, Yakubu, who scored 21 goals in 58 appearances for Nigeria, cited a lack of creativity in midfield and insufficient service to striker Victor Osimhen as key issues.

“If I played in this team, I would struggle to score goals,” the former Everton striker said on Sunday Oliseh’s podcast.

“When I watch Osimhen, I see that he’s fighting on his own. He knows already—when he scores, it’s because he hustles by himself,” he explained.

“We don’t play like a team. It’s individual football, and we expect the players to make magic,” Yakubu added.
