Former Nigeria captain John Mikel Obi has issued a stark warning: if the Super Eagles don’t make it to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, it might be time to dismantle the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Nigeria’s chances are slipping away after a disappointing draw with South Africa in Group C, leaving them third with just 11 points—six points shy of leaders Bafana Bafana—with only two games remaining.
During the Obi One Podcast, Mikel voiced his exasperation with the federation’s leadership, suggesting that flawed management may be the root of Nigeria’s ongoing struggles.
“If Nigeria doesn’t qualify for the World Cup, the entire NFF board has to go… it’s unacceptable,” the former Chelsea midfielder said. “We didn’t qualify for Qatar — the last World Cup — and now it looks like again we are not going to make it. Honestly, I have nothing to say about it. It is just h+rrible.”
Mikel emphasised that although players share some responsibility, the greater issue lies with football administrators.
“Do you blame the players? No, I don’t. Yes, the players have to take responsibility, but are you gonna blame the players alone? No… that’s why people disrespect African football,” he added.
He further contended that those in charge of Nigerian football must be held responsible for the country's decline.
Nigeria faces a tough road to the finals, but a glimmer of hope still exists. The Eagles are set to travel to Lesotho and then host Benin Republic in their last two qualification matches.
If they win both games and other results go their way, there's a chance they could qualify as one of Africa’s four best runners-up, earning a spot through the playoffs.
