2027: 'Nobody believes you', says El-Rufai as Obi, Amaechi beg for one term

Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has said that nobody believes it when the likes of ex-governors Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi say they will serve only one term if elected as President.

MyNigeria recalls that Obi recently made a vow to serve only one term if elected President in 2027.

“I will serve only one term of four years if elected President. And that vow is sacrosanct,” Obi stated on X.

Amaechi also committed to serving only a single term if selected by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its 2027 presidential candidate.

Their statement appeals to the idea of unseating President Bola Tinubu by using a fellow Southerner who will then serve only one term to complete the two terms of the South.

However, El-Rufai, during an interview with Channels TV’s Politics Today on Sunday, stated that making such a pledge is tantamount to throwing away one's constitutional right.

He said, "On the question of people coming out to say 'I'll do only one term'. I don't think anyone believes them. I don't think it is right. You should not constitutionally give up what is yours. Frankly, as someone who has been governor for eight years, and Amaechi and Peter Obi have both been governors, they know the time it takes to make meaningful change in government. Four years is not enough. So, I want to appeal to everyone to stop making comments like 'I'll do four years or I'll do 80', because nobody believes you."

Amaechi and Obi are jostling for the presidential ticket of the ADC alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
