Assistant Inspector General of Police, Special Protection Unit, AIF Tunji Disu, has advised the general public to beware of the scams criminals use to lure their victims into traps.

In a post on X, Disu revealed that such criminals use Facebook Marketplace, fake job advertisements and other scams to nab unsuspecting victims.

This was as he gave measures Nigerians should follow to avoid falling victim to such scams,

He wrote, "Be EXTREMELY cautious with online transactions and job opportunities. Whether you’re selling items on FB Marketplace, Craigslist, or responding to job postings (especially modeling opportunities), remember that criminals use fake advertisements to lure victims to dangerous locations.

-NEVER meet strangers in private locations (homes, hotels, secluded areas)
- ALWAYS bring someone with you to meetings
- ONLY meet in busy, public places during daylight hours
- Trust your instincts, if something feels wrong, it probably is
- Verify legitimacy before agreeing to meet
- Tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll return

"Your gut feeling is your best protection. While online platforms offer convenience, they can also expose you to serious danger. One moment of caution could save your life.

"If you have a personal story that reinforces these safety principles, sharing it could help others recognize red flags and stay safe.

"Remember, legitimate buyers and employers will understand and respect your safety precautions. Anyone who pressures you to meet privately or seems annoyed by reasonable safety measures is showing you a major red flag."
