A section of Nigerian football fans has taken to social media to take a swipe at Napoli following the injury to Romelu Lukaku ahead of the start of the new Serie A campaign.
The Belgian international sustained an injury during Napoli's 2–1 victory over Olympiakos Piraeus in a preseason friendly last week.
In a statement, the club disclosed that the 32-year-old has begun rehabilitation and will also undergo surgical consultation following his injury.
Lukaku, who replaced Osimhen at the Naples-based club at the beginning of last season, is set to spend three months on the sidelines.
The former Inter Milan forward is expected to return to action in November and will not be available for selection by manager Antonio Conte.
Lukaku's injury comes just a few weeks after Osimhen left the club on a permanent deal, joining Galatasaray.
The news of Lukaku's injury has been celebrated by some Nigerian fans who were unhappy with how the club treated Victor Osimhen prior to his departure.
A social media user, @oluwakso, said: "They are just start. What they did to Victor Osimhen will keep hurting them forever."
@iamclassics posted: "I knew a day like this would come."
Another user, @eth_Harvie, wrote: "Napoli better move quick on Rasmus Højlund before Chelsea show up trying to convince them Jackson is the next Osimhen."
@locked_Onchain added: "They shouldn’t have let Osimhen go. Serves them right."
@justicenwokedi5 said: "They should go sign that rejected boy [Nicholas Jackson] from Chelsea."
A report from Sportingpedia indicates that the Naples-based club is currently considering a potential signing to fill the void left by the Belgian striker.
Manchester United's Joshua Zirkzee, Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta, and AS Roma's Artem Dovbyk are currently under consideration by the club.
