The Think Yoruba First Organisation (TYF) has lamented the lack of response from the political class, particularly lawmakers, governors, and monarchs, regarding the HB2057 Indigenous Bill being proposed by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu.
The bill, which has passed second reading, will grant indigene rights to any Nigerian born in any part of the country who has stayed there for 10 years or is married to someone from the area.
Kicking against the bill, TYF said it had taken several actions as an organisation against it since March 2025.
TYF, through the Secretary Gneral, Dr. Bukola Adeniji Ogundoyin, listed the actions to include:
1. Issued press statements demanding the withdrawal of the bill
2. Send petitions to the South West lawmakers at both the state and federal level. These petitions were hand delivered.
3. Send petitions to all South West Governors - these petitions were hand delivered
4. Send letter of information of this bill to the Yoruba Monarchs via the office of the Leader of the Southern Traditional council Ooni Adeyeye Ogunwusi
5. Media outreach via @tvcnewsng against this destructive and chaotic bill of conquest
6. Make calls to the South West law makers to reject this bill
7. Intense social media campaign with fliers circulating since March on X, Facebook, Whatsapp, youtube etc. The battle for our land is not one for cowards, it is a must do.
TYF said to its dismay, Yoruba lawmakers and the monarchy have not responded to any of these outreaches, we hear cockroaches.
The organisation said, "This bill has scaled through second reading and waiting on final read. Why and how this bill made it past the first reading with no public knowledge should be directed to the Yoruba lawmakers.
"As this is currently gazetted, the SW lawmakers are not accessible, No Credible phone numbers for public contacts, no email that is reachable, no social media handle for 99% of them, no physical office, no website and 99% unresponsive rate when you miraculously get to talk to anyone of them via multiple lobbying.
"The message that the lawmakers are sending is that the constituents DOES NOT matter and that they sit on a pedestal that is meant for them only and to treat you like subject. When it is time of election they will come out and be distributing rice, going to restaurants to serve and roasting Bọli and Agbado with common man on the street. Immeadiately they get elected, they become demigods who are inaccessible and people become the masses that they start to treat like Almajiri. The artificially created poverty in the land has rendered the Yorubaland a feudal state which late sage Awolowo warned against.
"We copied democracy from the west, same west are accessible to their constituents and take their people seriously. We will no longer tolerate the closed door policy of the YORUBA Lawmakers, you are elected to serve, you must be accessible to serve, you are privileged based on Yoruba card, Yoruba slot, you must answer to the Yoruba. You are not doing us any favor, it is the right of the people. Many of you have travelled to the western countries where democracy was exported to you, you know that you can make an appointment and see the lawmkers, you get a call back, you get email response. It is not a favor, it is a right. The office is the peoples office, we want ACCESS to the peoples office.
"We are officially launching the campaign #openyouroffice."
